4 Days Mountain Meru Trekking

Day 1: Arusha (1400 m) – Miriakamba Hut (2500 m)

Duration: 5-7 hours trekking

After an early morning breakfast, you will be picked up from your hotel in Arusha (1400 m) and transferred to the Momella Gate of Arusha National Park. At this point, porters will organize and pack your trekking gear while you and your guide register with Tanzania National Park (TANAPA). You will then begin your ascent into Arusha National Park. The first day of trekking is similar to a walking safari; expect to see giraffes, zebras, antelopes, buffaloes and possibly elephants near the trail. Due to the high likelihood of wildlife sightings, an armed ranger hired through the national park to trek with our team is required for the duration of the trek. As the trek continues, we pass by the Ngarenanyuki River and a beautiful waterfall at the foot of Mount Meru. On arrival at Miriakamba Hut (2500 m), your cook will prepare a hot dinner and wash water for you. Enjoy the beautiful sunset and stay overnight.

Day 2: Miriakamba Hut (2500 m) – Saddle Hut (3500 m)

Duration: –  3-5 hours trekking

After breakfast, we start climbing up the steep trail along the saddle ridge. Along the way you can see a variety of wildlife! From the trail you will have views of the Meru Crater and the Hamutal. Once you reach the camp, you will have the opportunity to climb Little Meru Mountain (3820 m) with your guide to further acclimatize. An early dinner will be served so you can get plenty of rest before the midnight summit attempt. Get to bed by 19.00!

Day 3: Saddler’s hut (3500 m) – Slide attempt (4566 m) – Miriakamba hut (2500 m)

Duration:  10-12 hours trekking

Your guide will wake you up at 00:30 for tea and biscuits. You will then start your summit climbing attempt at 1:30am. The trail starts steeply between Rhino Point (3800 m) and Cobra Point (4350 m). During the last hour of the trek, you will scramble along the rocky ridge between the crater and the inner cliffs of Meru. You will reach the summit of Meru (4565 m) at sunrise, from where you will have a spectacular view of the Meru ash pan and Kilimanjaro. Enjoy the views and then descend to Saddle Hut for a short rest. Then descend further to Miriakamba Hut (2500 m) for dinner and overnight.

Day 4: Miriakamba Hut (2500 m) – Arusha (1400 m)

Duration: 2-3 hours trekking

After a long rest and breakfast, we start the final descent to Momella gate. We will trek through forests and meadows where we are likely to see wildlife. You will be met at the foot of Mount Meru by our driver who will take you back to Arusha.
