Mount Meru trekking
Mount Meru is one of the main attractions of Arusha National Park. The entire climb takes at least three days. The trail takes trekkers through a series of natural environments, with diverse flora and fauna and an interesting mix of nature and culture.
There is one route to the summit of Meru and it can be covered in three days, but four days is highly recommended for acclimatisation. Most climbers use Meru to acclimatise before climbing Kilimanjaro. There is less snow from volcanic eruptions on this mountain.
Unlike Kilimanjaro, when climbing Mount Meru you will be accompanied by one or more armed rangers through Arusha National Park. At this point, you can take a walking safari past African buffalo, zebra, black and white colobus monkeys and much more wildlife.
Day 1: Arusha (1400 m) – Miriakamba Lodge (2500 m)
5-7 hours trekking.
After breakfast in Arusha (1400m), you will be picked up from your hotel and transferred to the Momella Gate of Arusha National Park. At this point, porters will organize and pack your trekking luggage while you and your guide check in at Tanzania National Park (TANAPA). You will then start the trek to Arusha National Park. The first day of the trek is similar to a walking safari; you will probably see giraffe, zebra, antelope, buffalo and possibly elephant near the trail. As there is a high probability of seeing wildlife, armed game rangers contracted by the National Park should accompany our team during the trek. Along the way we will pass the Ngarenanyuki River and a beautiful waterfall at the foot of Mount Meru. After arriving at Miriakamba Hut (2500 m), our cook will prepare a hot dinner and water for washing. Enjoy the beautiful sunset and night.
Day 2: Miriakamba Hut (2500m) – Pelana Hut (3500m)
Duration: 3-5 hours hiking
After breakfast, start up the steep trail along the saddle ridge. After breakfast, we will start our morning hike up the trail to the top of the pelamana. The trail offers views of Mount Meru crater and the ash crater. On arrival at the camp, you will have the opportunity to climb Little Meru Mountain (3820 m) with your guide to better acclimatize. You will be treated to an early dinner to rest before the midnight trek. You will sleep until 7pm.
Day 3: Saddle hut (3500m) – Peak Tension (4566m) – Miriakamba hut (2500m)
Duration: 1: 12-14 hours trekking
Your guide will wake you up at 00:30 for tea and biscuits. The trekking trail starts steeply from Cape Rhino (3800 m) to Cape Cobra (4350 m). The last hour of the trek is spent climbing the rocky ridge between the crater and the inner cliffs of Meru. At sunrise, you will reach the summit of Meru (4665 m), from where you will have a spectacular view of the Meru ash pan and Kilimanjaro. Enjoy the view and then descend to the saddle hut for a short rest. At Saddle hut, we will have a short rest and lunch before continuing our descent to Momella gate. At Momella gate, your transfer vehicle will be waiting for you, ready to pick you up at your hotel in Mohi or Arusha.
